The CityLit Project was proud to manage the 2017 competition in partnership with the Maryland State Arts Council.

CityLit Project joins the Maryland State Arts Council (MSAC) in congratulating 17-year-old Angeline Faieq of George Washington Carver Center for Arts and Technology in Baltimore County on becoming the 2017 Maryland Poetry Out Loud State Champion. She received a $200 and an all-expenses-paid trip with an adult chaperone to Washington, D.C., to compete in the National Finals, April 24-26, 2017, at the Lisner Auditorium at George Washington University, Washington, D.C. The National Finals are free and open to the public, and are also broadcast via livestream on the evening of April 27 at 7:00 p.m. on the Poetry Out Loud website.

Poetry Out Loud is a nationwide poetry recitation competition funded by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation. it encourages students to learn about great poetry through memorization and recitation. This program helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about literary history and contemporary life.

Since 2005, Poetry Out Loud has grown to reach more than 3 million students and 50,000 teachers from 10,000 schools in every state, Washington, D.C., the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico. Each year, students select from a standard, but very diverse, list of eligible poems.

Last year in Maryland, 9,000 students from 42 schools participated with guidance from 192 teachers in 14 counties.  Four Maryland State champions have made it to the final round of nine students in the National contest in Washington, placing 2nd in 2010 (Blessed Sheriff, Richard Montgomery High in Montgomery County) and 3rd in 2013 (Nora Sandler, also from Richard Montgomery High). In 2016, State champ Sharese Acheampong (school?) also made it to the final round of nine (see her video interview here).
