WELCOME TO MARYLAND'S POETRY OUT LOUD COMPETITION
managed in partnership between CityLit Project and the Maryland State Arts Council
. Poetry Out Loud
is a nationwide poetry recitation competition funded by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation. it encourages students to learn about great poetry through memorization and recitation. This program helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about literary history and contemporary life.
Since 2005, Poetry Out Loud has grown to reach more than 3 million students and 50,000 teachers from 10,000 schools in every state, Washington, D.C., the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico. Each year, students select from a standard, but very diverse, list of eligible poems
Last year in Maryland, 9,000 students from 42 schools participated with guidance from 192 teachers in 14 counties. Four Maryland State champions have made it to the final round of nine students in the National contest in Washington, placing 2nd in 2010 (Blessed Sheriff, Richard Montgomery High in Montgomery County) and 3rd in 2013 (Nora Sandler, also from Richard Montgomery High). In 2016, State champ Sharese Acheampong (school?) also made it to the final round of nine (see her video interview here
